2006 was the year of the bicycles in New Zealand. The Kiwis bought approximately 30,000 more bicycles than cars with bicycle sales rising to 40% over the last 4 years.

Hilly cities normally have a low share of cycling. How come that Trondheim, the third largest city of Norway, has the highest share of cycling compared to all the other Norwegian cities?

One key reason is the bicycle lift Trampe. Since the opening in 1993, it's pushed more than 220 000 cyclist up the very steep hill BBrubakken in the historical heritage part of the city center

Not all of Santa's elves wear red coats and pointy shoes. Some of them don sheriff's green and combat boots.

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, there were more than 4,200 bike-related patents issued between 1996 and 2000--do the math, and you're talking more than 800 patents per year and more than two bike patents per day. According to Bicycling magazine senior editor Garrett Lai, bikes have always been a product category with plenty of patent action. "Bikes are accessible, people can see all the parts and how they work, and they can create a new bike innovation in their garage," he says.


Black may still be the in color for formalwear and football jerseys, but Yann Mellet wants to make it passe for bicycle tires.

Sweetskinz Inc., which Mellet formed four years ago, has begun marketing bike tires with colorful patterns that reflect light.

So far, Sweetskinz has sold and given away more than 10,000 tires to bike-shop owners and workers in order to familiarize them with the product.


Vital Media Network and Haro Bicycles have partnered to find the next Haro team member. Aspiring riders must upload to the Vital BMX Web site a video of themselves riding and performing their best tricks. Videos are posted within a few minutes of uploading, and viewers can then rate and add comments.

At the close of the contest on Jan. 15, 2007, Haro will view the videos and pick 10 riders to be flown to Greenville, North Carolina, to spend a weekend with the Haro BMX team.


World Madison champion Isaac Galvez (Caisse d'Epargne) died after an overnight fall during the Ghent six-day, the Belga news agency reported Sunday.

Galvez, who has been a professional since 2000, died while being transported to a local hospital.

An initial diagnosis suggests the cause of death was from an internal hemorrhage, however complete details will not be available until a full autopsy is completed on Sunday.

Australia's women won four gold medals and their consistent performances across the board lifted the team to 103 points to finish four points clear of defending series champion the Netherlands after 16 events over three days.

The American Bicycle Association (ABA) has reached an agreement with Tim Lillethorup of Lillethorup Productions to form a new content-rich, interactive BMX Web site, ABABMX.tv. The Web site, scheduled to debut in 2007, will broadcast all 27 ABA national events, including 14 of them live.


Women cyclists logging at least 30 miles a week on a bicycle can expect decreased genital sensation and increased pain compared with active non-cycling runners, according to an article published in the latest issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

"We found that competitive women cyclists have a decrease in genital sensation," said Marsha K. Guess, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale and the lead author of the study. But women runners had no similar decrease in sensation as a result of their activity.


Australia's Olympic and Commonwealth Games track cycling champion Anna Meares has set a new world record for the women's 500 time trial.

Meares clocked a time of 33.944sec Saturday to break her own world record by eight thousandths of a second in the final of the event at the UCI track cycling World Cup.
